TURF THE VALLEY!
As principal of MTHS, I am excited with the community initiative to provide an artificial turf surface for our football field. This will benefit not only various athletic teams at the high school, but also will be of value to the community in general. As many know, our field is utilized for many school and public events throughout the year. The field will definitely showcase our band and female athletic program, since both utilize the field on a regular basis. Also, the new surface will prevent the sloppy field conditions that occur during rainy weather prior to middle school promotion and high school graduation exercises that are traditionally held on this field. When these events are forced indoors, the number of spectators is significantly reduced. So from these perspectives, this initiative is good for our students, their parents, and the community.
-Fred D’Antoni, MTHS Principal
Installing artificial turf on the high school stadium field will be a tremendous addition to our school facilities, our athletic teams and our marching band. After this project is completed, our boys and girls soccer and lacrosse teams, field hockey program, football team and marching band will have the advantage of participating in all scheduled games, practice sessions and competitions regardless of the weather. The artificial turf will provide all participants a safe and dry surface to compete on, void of holes, ruts and mud. During the school day, our physical education classes will enjoy the same advantages as will our after school activities. Yearly field maintenance costs will be significantly reduced as will transportation costs that many of our athletic programs incur when inclement weather makes it necessary to practice or compete on other community artificial turf fields.
-Steve Naccara, Athletic Director
Turf fields are more durable, more versatile, and more easily maintained than grass. From a coach's perspective, a turf facility increases performance and decreases injury. From a player's perspective, a turf field will increase the speed of play, eliminate bad bounces and provide a truly level playing field.
-Jen Mulvaney, Girls’ Lacrosse Coach
In this day and age, one grass field cannot survive the great number of teams and activities that a high school and community require. During the fall, our football squad (varsity, junior varsity and freshman) plays their games, and our band practices and competes in the stadium. During the spring, the boys and girls lacrosse teams (varsity, junior varsity and freshman) play their games on the field. When not competing, either the girls or boys practice on it. With graduation and the community carnival, there is never a chance for substantial recovery. "Turf the Valley" is a logical answer and will help our school, our athletic teams, our band and our community with an all-weather, all-purpose facility.”
